Tunnel from Prague to Beroun has green light, positive EIA moves plan to next phase

The new construction of the line between Prague Smíchov and Beroun has received a positive opinion from the Ministry of the Environment. The ambitious project will significantly speed up journeys from the metropolis to the west of Bohemia and Bavaria, while relieving the congested suburban line around the Berounka River.

The EIA report thoroughly examined the impact of the construction on the environment and the health of the inhabitants, both during construction and future operation. All aspects assessed, including noise pollution, air and water quality, meet the legal limits. In addition, compliance with these parameters will be continuously supervised by monitoring.

The documentation for the building permit is currently being processed. Now the conditions set out in the binding opinion of the EIA will be incorporated into it, and then Správa železnic will apply for a permit for the project plan. The construction should start with preparatory work in 2028, with the actual tunnelling starting in 2031. The first passengers should then ride on the brand-new line in 2038.

The 24.7 km long Beroun Tunnel will be the most important construction object on the new line construction between Prague and Beroun. It is designed for train speeds of up to 200 km/h. The scope of the project is unique in the history of Správa železnic. It will enable the diversion of long-distance passenger and freight traffic from the existing busy route along the Berounka River.
