Správa železnic is one of the largest distributors of electricity and gas. It has already selected suppliers for next year

Správa železnic ensures the purchase of electricity and gas for nearly four thousand customers in the transport sector, making it one of the four largest distributors in the Czech Republic. In the current challenging situation, it is focusing on finding savings, saving almost CZK 131 million in electricity alone last year. Early contracting of favourable purchase prices on the commodity exchange also reduces costs.

Thanks to an innovative approach and the setting of uniform rules, Správa železnic took 22 GWh less electricity and 9.3 GWh less gas last year compared to the previous year. This represents a year-on-year saving of seven per cent in the first case and even fourteen per cent in the second one.

For electricity, the savings amounted to CZK 130.9 million. It has been achieved thanks to several measures, mainly in operation, such as the modernisation of signalling equipment, the regulation of heating or the installation of photovoltaic panels.

Moreover, in connection with the energy crisis caused mainly by the war in Ukraine, Správa železnic started to adjust the possibilities of concluding contracts with traders according to the so-called spot prices (SPOT), i.e. through the daily electricity market. Thanks to this, the price since the beginning of last year has been 20 to 40 percent lower than the CZK 5,000 per MWh capped by the government. Last year, except for January and February, the price of electricity and gas was even lower than in the previous year.

Správa železnic purchases electricity and gas for nearly four thousand external customers, including railway carriers and selected organisations in the transport sector, such as Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic, České dráhy, ČD Cargo, Air Navigation Services of the Czech Republic, Waterways Directorate of the Czech Republic and other important entities.

In order to avoid possible price fluctuations on the energy market, it has already successfully tendered for the supply of traction power for next year, which is used for the operation of electric trains on the Czech railway network. Through an auction on the PXE commodity exchange, the company Powertica Energie has been selected as the supplier to provide traction electricity for Správa železnic in the next year in an estimated volume of 1,220 GWh. Its purchase will take place gradually, eighty percent will be secured by fixing through wholesale traded products, while the remaining fifth will be purchased at so-called spot prices on the daily market.
