Modernisation of Vsetín station has progressed, passengers have new facilities at their disposal

Opening ceremony of the combined check-in terminal for railway and bus transport took place in Vsetín today. Passengers at the station can also make full use of the new pedestrian underpass to individual platforms. This is a concrete result of the ongoing modernisation of the entire station, which began at the end of 2021 and will end this December.

The existing station building in Vsetín was replaced by a two-storey glass building of the transport terminal, which is now beginning to serve passengers in railway and bus transport. “Vsetín is another example that it is possible to connect different modes of transport in our conditions by building common terminals. Improving interchanges is one of the ways to improve the quality of public transport, which increases its attractiveness for the wide public,” says Minister of Transport Martin Kupka.

One of the main objectives of the project was to replace the existing platforms with level access over the tracks. The new ones are wide enough and roofed. “Thanks to their height, passengers can comfortably get directly onto the train. For safe access, we have built a pedestrian underpass with lifts to individual platforms. It starts already in the Smetanka department store and passes under the entire track to connect the city districts on both sides of the station,” Jiří Svoboda, Director General of Správa železnic, describes some of the benefits of the reconstruction.

We have been preparing intensively for the new train station since 2015. In cooperation with a private investor, we built the adjacent shopping area, which now forms a functional unit with the railway station and the emerging bus terminal. In advance, we bought up land and prepared a study of the new form of the site. This preparation has been worthwhile, because the Ministry of Transport and Správa železnic have accepted our proposals and today we can see a successful result,” explained the mayor of Vsetín Jiří Čunek.

The works included the reconstruction of the entire station and the connecting section to the Ústí u Vsetína stop as well. From the point of view of safety, it was important to cancel the level crossing directly at the station, cars can now use the new road and the bridge over the Rokytenka rivulet. Instead of the existing crossing in Štěpánská Street, a pedestrian underpass was created, which opens into U Křivačkárny Street.

The contractor of the construction with the total cost of over CZK 2.5 billion are the companies OHLA ŽS, STRABAG Rail and AŽD. Most of the works have already been completed. The construction of the parking house and the bus station continues.

Implementation of the Reconstruction of the railway station Vsetín is co-financed by the European Union from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The total amount of eligible project costs is EUR 114,908,997. The rate of EU support is 73.63 % of the eligible costs and the maximum amount of subsidy is EUR 84,607,494, i.e. approximately CZK 2,129,936,673. National financing is provided by Státní fond dopravní infrastruktury (State Fund for Transport Infrastructure).
