Modern terminal in Jihlava will connect trains with buses and public transport

Transformation of the Jihlava city railway station into a modern transport terminal has begun, Správa železnic and the city of Jihlava today inaugurated the reconstruction of the station and the station forecourt. The builders will construct a completely new building that will serve as a background not only for passengers from trains, but also from buses and public transport. The tracks including the platforms will also undergo a complete reconstruction, barrier-free access to them will be provided by a pedestrian underpass with lifts. Completion of the work is planned for mid-2026.

The Jihlava City Station is located near the centre of the regional metropolis. Bus stops and public transport stops will be built in its forecourt area. “Passengers will be able to transfer comfortably between the various modes of public transport and will find all the necessary facilities in the new station building. In the future, this station will also be served by high-speed trains from Prague and Brno, which will arrive here on a new line built along the motorway feeder,” said Jiří Svoboda, Director General of Správa železnic

The new station building will have two floors. The first will contain a common departure and arrival hall. On the second floor, there will be a separate waiting area for transferring passengers.

The reconstructed station will consist of two new platforms, safe access to them will be via a pedestrian underpass. Passengers will appreciate not only the comfortable and fast boarding of trains, but also the barrier-free solution in the form of lifts. The new underpass will run under the entire track facility, and in the future, it is planned to lead to Mostecká Street on the other side of the station.

“A substantial part of the construction has been developed as a 3D model, and for the first time in the Czech Republic we will use augmented reality technology directly on the construction site, which will make it easier for us to coordinate the work. The first order of business within the construction is the dismantling of a part of the track facility, including the overhead contact line, and work on the new technology building,” said Ondřej Zedník, Project Manager of Skanska, on behalf of the contractor.

The city of Jihlava will build a P+R parking lot with 68 places and a road including a roundabout as part of its own construction. The project also includes new public lighting and pavements, stops of replacement service and the expansion of public greenery.

The total investment costs of the construction called Modernisation of the Railway Station Jihlava město amount to CZK 1,754,527,446 excluding VAT. The project is co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Programme Transport 2021-2027. The total amount of eligible project costs is CZK 1,567,582,790. The EU support rate is 80.75 % of the eligible costs, so the maximum subsidy amount is CZK 1,265,823,102. National financing is provided by Státní fond dopravní infrastruktury (State Fund for Transport Infrastructure).
